Update at the beginning of 2009

Well the world has changed substantially since I began this blog and my dependence on God as my source of security and direction in life has been tested. The current credit crunch has however made me even more conscious of the importance of understanding that Jesus became human, lived in a very basic life with none of the comforts we have, and not even the joy of marriage and lived the end of his life in expectation of a horrible death. It is through my understanding that he suffered that I can find some strength and comfort in my times of difficulty and know that Jesus does understand the pain of humanity and the world.

The project has developed substantially since the start as I hope is demonstrated by viewing the website www.the-network.info which is substantially complete. the challenge now is to use the website to engage with people and actually make a difference to people’s lives through the projects we feature and support. Concrete evidence that the website has been successful in that regard is yet to be demonstrated.

Soul cafe update

The Soul cafe has now been meeting regularly and the times have been changed, see the soul cafe website (see links) for latest details. The team are keen to have the opportunity to promote the cafe within all the local churches and have approached the leadership direct to ask for these opportunities

Update on Vision for Retired people

it is hoped that this vision can be developed through the Volunteer Visiting Programme which is supported accross around 20 Wokingham churches and is in the process of securing funding and appointing a part-time administrator to support the work.

Communication Progress

Progress on the website concept has been slow however a trial website has been set up at http://woodley.2day.ws/ and the decision made to hold further development of this site pending the development of a more comprehensive approach entitled ‘network Wokingham’ that uses some of the expertise available to the faith in the community group that has been used to develop some websites such as network Norwich and network Leeds (see website links)

Attached proposal has been produced for further discussion

Website spec for Network Wokingham

Meanwhile the more conventional methods of communication are being utilised, this includes use of small the church notice sheets, an update newsletter (see below) which was accompanied by presentation by Jeremy Galpin in St Johns, St James, Christ Church, Emmanuel and The Airfield all during October

Woodley Churches Update

Acting Politically, Progress Report

An initial meeting was advertised in all the churches and 6 people attended all keen to work together and address political issues as a group. A range of issues were discussed including the development work at Waingels college.  next meeting tba

Second Prayer Event

Around 20 people met (Halfterm did not help) for our 2nd prayer event hosted at Woodley baptist Church focusing on the Project led by Sue Collins supporting children going through the pain of divorce or bereavement. Sue spoke on the project and the focus of the prayer was around this project. Sue asked for specific prayer that her current list of 3 faciltiators and 1 administrator be increased to the 6 facilitators she requires to run the project. The plan is to launch the first event in January 2008. I personally found it most rewarding to be praying with other christaina about lvie and uptodate projects and to workship together, the prayer time goes very quickly and maybe we need more time on prayer?

Next meeting Christ Church 26th November where we will be praying in particular for the Soul cafe

First Prayer event

around 40 people from accross the churches attended the first Prayer event held at St Johns on the 24th September. Sam Milligan updated everyone on the work of JAC and in particular asked for prayer for the opportunity that JAC was hoping to get to run the coffee shop in the Oakwood Centre. He also highlighted the funding needed around 12 k for that work and addn needs for the ’small Camel’. Following on from the prayer event the follow significant answers to prayer have been recieved:

JAC has received approval to run the Oakwood centre coffee shop, see the latest JAC newsletter.

On the same night following the prayer event Sam and Yvonne has a phone call pledging the £10,000 required for the start up of the Café

Also following the prayer event a further £2000 has been pledges for the ‘baby camel’

I am sure that there are also lots of personal examples of people being blessed by being there, I was.

Wow isn’t God good and what a fantastic way people have responded to these needs!! Wow

Please put in your diary the next prayer event is on the 22nd November (4th Monday of October also the Monday of half term. at WBC) where we will be focusing on the project run by Sue Collins that will provide support to Children whose families are going through the pain of separation

Woodley Soul Cafe Launches

Saturday 15th September the woodley soul cafe had it’s first meeting with ‘invited guests’ as a ‘test session’ the intention is to gradually expand to accommodate more of those who do not attend a ‘conventional church’  . Church Leaders Workshop

On the 24th June 30 Church leaders representing 6 churches from Woodley met with the objective of maintaining the momentum for working together that had been developed from the Lent Groups. This was the final of a series of meetings that followed on from the Lent groups. The previous events have been a Leadership workshop for the core leaders ( primarily the fraternal) and a dreams into visions half day workshop for those who felt God was directing them with a particular vision.

The leaders met for an excellent lunch where they sat in mixed groups and after lunch there was a 21/2 hr workshop. The key objectives of the event were as follows:

Develop Relationships, Share the committment made by the core leadership team, introduce the Dreams into visions projects and identify actions that can ‘maintain the momentum’.

The most significant action that was discussed and will be developed into a proposal is that of creating an effective way for us to PRAY together both as a leadership team and with other christians across Woodley on a regular basis.

Full details of the outputs from the workshop are attached , click to open.
